ACTIVISM – Cookware Poster (Handout)

This poster will help you understand the various types of cookware and which one’s are safe to cook with.
Anything that’s healthy for a human being is also healthy for his natural environment, and therefore any unsafe cookware is not sustainable and has no future in our culture.  Anything that makes people sick will be phased out, and whatever healthy and sustainable cookware there is will become the standard.

I recently purchased glass cookware for my family on ebay and it was just over $100 for an entire set of beautiful cookware.  If you want to change the world,  we must do it one step at a time, one product at a time.
Here’s what you can do:

  • Buy glass cookware for yourself.
Ebay Keyword suggestions:  ‘Corning Visions Set’
  • Throw out your old cookware or give it away for free on freecycle.org
  • Buy glass cookware as gifts for all your family and friends on birthdays.
  • Include a copy of this poster with the gift
  • Post this poster at work, at school, in washrooms, at bus stops, in grocery stores, or hand them out to people in town.

Glass wins in the sustainability category, safer than all other types of cookware currently on the market.  The only thing not sustainable is the energy used to heat and form the cookware, and to fix it will require a brand new and efficient means of harvesting energy.

What about the eco-friendly coated pans? I’ve heard that they’re better, but suppose not as good as glass.

could you point me to the sources that you got this supposed “research” from? im having trouble finding how you came across these conclusions. it hard to believe with nothing backing it up. it’s just you saying it’s true. not enough to sway me quite yet.

The non-stick research came from a book called ‘Stain-resistant, nonstick waterproof and lethal’, and the rest I gathered online. If you think people have nothing better to do than invent this type of information, just ask yourself – who benefits from this information? Just the people, that is all. I’m not selling any cookware either so my motives are pure.

And what about copper ? Most big & fancy restaurants use 100% copper pots ; and its said that it is the best for cooking . ( I tend to drop things , so glass isn’t the best choice for me :s )

I found an article that says this about copper cookware:
“Copper Cookware is Excellent for Certain Uses
One other surface favored by chefs for sauces and sautés is copper, which excels at quick warm-ups and even heat distribution. Since copper can leak into food in large amounts when heated, the cooking surfaces are usually lined with tin or stainless steel.”

If its coated as described above then it wouldn’t be a very good choice, however if it actually is just pure copper then it may be one of the better choices in the list of other types of cookware.
Copper is an interesting metal. A couple of years ago I wrote an article on copper and other metals used by the ancients for health and spiritual purposes.

Copper seems to express in some people health benefits, but like anything else that leaches you have to be careful it doesn’t cause mineral imbalances in the body.

I like glass the best because it doesn’t leach anything into my food.
You are right, although they are actually pretty solid and probably a lot less delicate than most people would imagine, they can break if mishandled.

CAST IRON gives HUGE benefits of iron in food. Only needs cool water right
after use, turn it upside down in sink to drain. Eat your food, hang up the
pan. WARNING: cast iron from China is made with radioactive materials.
Cast iron AND other products in USA made within ten years can ALSO have “low level” radiation as the US gov released it into the HOUSEHOLD MANUFACTURING stream of steel when prices went up. I no longer have the
link to this, 3 computers ago, sorry.
so… BUY ALL OLD cast iron and get some great iron workers going in a
private company with clean us steel … expensive but worth it.
TRUE all the stuff about glass being clean!!!
Remember not to change its temperature TOO FAST it is still glass!
Also no abrasive cleaners and use rubber and wood and bamboo utensils
to avoid scratching and weakening the inner surfaces. Soak before cleaning works well.
